My sister just bought The Hunger Games and I'm watching it with her. This is the third time I've sat through this movie (once on opening night, once to chaperone my other sister, and now), and holy hell, Rifftrax so needs to release commentary for this.

I'd be surprised if they didn't get to eventually.

It's just after watching it now, it's amazing how badly handled this movie was. Aside from the obvious shaky cam jokes, there's just so much structurally wrong with it I'm surprised it got the following it did. The whole system is flawed for one (how do you build hope by taking two kids from every district and forcing them to kill each other?), the plot development is stupid (why would anyone form a hunting team if they all have to kill each other in the end?), and it gets resolved in a ridiculous Deus Ex Machina (why doesn't this game have a failsafe so that two contestants can't simultaneously commit suicide?).

I know Hunger Games fans hate the comparison, and I'm sure this sounds unoriginal as fuck, but Battle Royale handled all the problems this movie had just by changing two variables. Instead of random kids getting plucked out of their district, you had a class of kids who built bonds with each other over several years whom were forced to kill each other. And instead of requiring a winner, Battle Royale says "fuck winning" and blows the kids up with extreme prejudice. And even though Battle also has the characters cheating to survive, it's believable and catches you off guard when you find out it worked.

The worst part is that my friends who used to bash Twilight are heavily into this shit and claim it's better when it has almost all the same problems. They claim it's better to read the books (this is a stupid argument for one since a movie should always be standalone and not require reading the source), but no prose can fix the shaky foundation.

Perhaps their standards were so utterly destroyed by Twilight that they'll take the first thing they think is half way decent?

Jesuszilla

That sounds like an interesting experiment. Take random people who haven't watched the Star Wars prequels. Have half of them watch Episode II: Attack of the Clones, then ask for their opinion on the film. Take the other half, have them watch Twilight first, THEN have them watch Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Compare the results to see if those who watched Twilight enjoyed Attack of the Clones more or less than those who did not.
