It could be either one or two things with the placeholders there:

1: Could be leftover files from Melee.
2: Could be placeholders for future characters(DLC, maybe?)

As Neon indicated, it looks like the select screen could be made to scroll.  Dr. Mario, Roy, and Mewtwo could be future Downloadable content.

The Wii's internal space is too small to hold characters. It's leftovers or unfinished projects.

If they WERE leftovers from Melee, then why did they bother to delete Pichu's folder if they didn't delete the others? And further Dixie and T. Zelda/Sheik couldn't be leftovers from Melee as they were never there.

Also Kirby scalped Sonic.

Ironically, Jigglypuff is one of the last characters you unlock this time around, along with T. Link and Wolf they're hiding in areas of SSE after you beat, and won't show up for their single player requirements until after you beat it either. Further Wolf is hiding in a rather obscure spot which is why it took people so long to unlock him. There also the last three you can unlock via amount of matches played, with Wolf being the highest at 450.

Also Jesus, Popo is the name of the male Ice Climber.

I find it funny how Mabel (a porcupine) is right behind him in that shot.

I had a little idea...

Involving a fake 'music swap' of Smash Bros Melee.

UHMEEEEBA

Speaking of Melee music, most all of the major tracks from Melee (Minus Fourside*) are on the disc likely to be used for the Melee stages. The old Fire Emblem theme is one of them. If they aren't used for that then they're just leftover tracks I guess.

*Unless you count Snowman or Pollyanna (although they were in Earthbound they were first in Mother), this makes the only track from Earthbound the Drug Store theme.

Hey guys, it's rumor time.

Also, everyone's alt colors, Jiggs indeed did lose the awesome headband.

UHMEEEEBA

Triple post yes, but possibly worth it,

Update on those phantom character files, apparently they are coding for unused characters. The phantom files are about the same size as Sheik as of right now. Because of this the remaining files would apparently be small enough for the Wii's internal space to handle.

They include everyone mentioned previously and some apparent tag team named Plusle & Minun (who the heck are these guys?!). In addition three unused sound tracks, one of which is named "Purchase" are in the game, so I may have to concede that there may be downloadable content... although it may cost you.

I'd really hope this would be true so my Melee main, the doctor of pain can come back. As such I must post an appropriate image from Melee:

... still though wonder why no Pichu he was a great joke character...

No, he was awesome to use to beat people and make them realize how much they suck.

Also, Bowsercide.

For Jiggs users (I doubt there are any here), while Rest is no longer as much a killing move, the hit box for the move is now significantly larger so it is easier to hit with.

Alleged trophy translations (no titles) here. SSE spoilers and bad writing in a few (they call Kaptain K. Rool, King K. Rool's brother).

That Bowser suicide is fucking cheap and lame.

What gets me is how many of these guys are saying he's the best ever when what he did was weak and cowardly.

So, wait, King K. Rool is a subspace boss?

Eh, at least he appears in the actual gameplay SOMEHOW.

UHMEEEEBA

No he isn't, I was just pointing out one of the trophy translations is horribly inaccurate, K. Rool is just a regular trophy. In fact the only series to get bosses are Mario, Pokemon, Metroid and Mother.

There are also SSE trophies which spoil the games plot which was what I was talking about, sorry for the confusion.

Also here's the reason why Marth's Final is so cheap if you miss with it well...

Why not a FALCON QUARTET?

Speaking of the Captain, the nerfed his forward air, the dreaded Knee.
