Theres a lot of words for groupings of animals,

School of Fish
Murder of Crows
Gaggle of Geese [when stationary]
Skein of Geese [when flying, no really they make a distinction]
Colony of Bats

etc, these words do have a purpose, they're mainly used by ecologists\biologists who have to refer to groups of different animals all the times.
